NS3678 : Bomb crater

taken 12 years ago, near to Renton, West Dunbartonshire, Great Britain

Bomb crater
Bomb crater
The crater, just one of several in this area, is located near the centre of the photograph, with tufts of grass filling its left-hand side.

The reason for the presence of these craters is that, during the Second World War, a Starfish Decoy (a system of decoy fires) was located nearby; no traces of it are now visible. See LinkExternal link (at Canmore) for details of this particular decoy site, and LinkExternal link (Archive LinkExternal link ) (at SecretScotland) for an explanation of Starfish Decoys in general.

Not far to the east, a few more pits of a similar size are visible, but those often have smooth exposed areas of limestone at their edges, and they are relics of limestone quarrying from an earlier period; see NS3678 : Former cornstone workings on Carman Muir.
Kipperoch Starfish decoy :: NS3777

According to LinkExternal link (at Secret Scotland), there was a Starfish decoy (a kind of WWII decoy fire) at Kipperoch (c.NS369782). There are no visible remains at the fire site itself, but the control bunker survives, about 800 metres to the SE. Its entrance passage faces ESE, and a chimney-like feature at the SW is an access hatch above a ladder.
