Kirkconnell House
Kirkconnell House
Can be hired for weddings etc.. Kirkconnell Tower is the adjoining stone building to the left of the house - its walls are ten feet thick. In the Middle Ages, the Borders were controlled by several powerful farming families. There were frequent hostilities between them and the family at Kirkconnell fortified their farmhouse with the addition of the tower and a high stone wall round the farmyard (now a courtyard) behind the house. The white building to the right of the house has accommodation rooms on the ground floor and the large family chapel on the first floor. The large walled garden just south of the house complex is now a horticultural nursery with greenhouses. A Chestnut tree adjacent to the walled garden is said to be the largest in the country.
