NS4079 : Fungal parasite on lichen

Fungal parasite on lichen
Fungal parasite on lichen
[For the habitat, see NS4079 : Footpath to Pappert Hill - near the woods' edge; the present photograph shows a detail from a fallen tree that lies beside that path.]

Several species of lichen (e.g., those in the genus Parmelia) are found with patches that have turned pink. These are areas where the lichen has been attacked by a parasitic fungus.

In this photo, infection seems to be well advanced: the lichen, which would earlier have been pink in the affected areas, now has a bleached appearance. The fungus has formed some small pink structures on the surface of the lichen.

Compare NS3778 : Pink fungal parasite on lichen and NS3779 : Lichen (Pertusaria pertusa) with fungal parasite.
