The Forth Bridge
The Forth Bridge
"The Forth Bridge ...It is big and it is clever"
.....surely not often can one hear this antithesis of that well-known phrase. The mighty cantilever structure across the Forth Estuary was built in the late 19th Century. One of the great industrial wonders of the world, if not one of the seven.

The bridge is currently undergoing some renovation work. It used to take a million men half an hour to paint it. Now I've heard there's just one man and he'll be there... well, have you heard the "contagious" joke?

Looking over from Carlingnose* Point toward Inchgarvie on which the centre cantilever span of the bridge is founded. In the near distance is the old quarry now Deep Sea World. In the middle distance is a former Naval signals station. LinkExternal link.

*"Carlin" is a corruption of the Gaelic word "Cailleach", meaning a witch or the 'old Hag', goddess of Winter. "Carlingnose" is probably therefore the Witch’s Nose. Perhaps that's why they called nearby kirk LinkExternal link St Bridget's Kirk. "Bridget" was the goddess of Spring and was associated with healing and sacred wells, therefore the antithesis of "Carlin".
