Star Engineering Ltd

Star were motor vehicle manufacturers prior to the First World War. The Grade II listed Star Works on Frederick Street was built in 1903.

During the First World War the works produced tank gear boxes, mine firing mechanisms, hydrostatic witches for mines, aeroplane wings and parts. The company also supplied commercial vehicles. Of the 700 employees 100 were women.

The business resumed production of motor vehicles after the war and moved to Bushbury in 1922.

After use as a furniture works and saleroom it has recently been converted to a disco venture.

The Star Works was built in 1903 providing 40,000 square feet of factory space around a central courtyard. The Star Company built their first bicycle in 1869 and first car in 1892. This was one of the first purpose built car factories. The company operated until 1928 when it was taken over by Guy Motors. The listed building is now a furniture factory outlet.
