Geo-Trips :: A circuit of the Moors of Galloway

Moors of Galloway

A cycle ride from Glenluce, Fri, 28 Apr 2006 by Oliver Dixon

Back in 2006, Galloway was almost completely virgin territory for Geographers. It was an area I had long wanted to visit, so at the end of April I spent a week based at a farmhouse B and B at Duragit, at the head of Luce Bay. My first morning there was a bright spring day so I drove to Glenluce - only a little over two miles but the stretch of the A75 between Dunragit and Glenluce is a particularly evil bit of road. From there I set off on the road to the "Moors". Lonely farming country, there was little sign of habitation, as most of the farms are set some way back off the road. I diverted briefly to take in Loch Heron and Loch Ronald, before reaching the cross-roads at Dirnow in the midst of forestry. Here I turned south across some real moorland to hit the A75 where I picked up traces of both the old Military Road and the old railway. Kirkcowan where I stopped for lunch was the only nucleated settlement I passed through all day. I continued south through the forestry at Mindork Moss before turning west across Challochglass Moor. It was here that my ride began to get quite challenging. Older road maps show a motorable road through to Whitefield Loch, but warning signs indicate that this is no longer so, and I found I was plodging through some very large puddles and marshy stretches for three kilometres before regaining the tarmac. I picked up the main A747 back into Glenluce to conclude a very pleasant and fruitful day.
